About Chinese Medicine

What can Chinese Medicine do for me?
I firmly believe that Chinese Medicine can help with all conditions that people are suffering from. This is because it helps to restore balance to the body. This system of medicine has been used for around 5,000 years and treated one of the largest populations in the world.

The Chinese were introduced to Western Medicine at the same time that we were introduced to Chinese Medicine. This was in the 1970’s when President Nixon was visiting China and one of his aides got sick and was treated with acupuncture. China is far ahead of us in integrating these two systems of medicine. They did not abandon Chinese Medicine because it works. A patient in China can now go to a hospital where the doctors have been trained in both styles of medicine and choose which one he or she is more comfortable with. The doctors there are also able to say which treatment has been shown to be more effective for certain conditions.

This is the point that we are finally starting to get to here in the west. Acupuncture is just starting to be offered in some hospitals here. It is being put under the microscope and is proving to be effective under the scrutiny of rigorous scientific studies. The World Health Organization recognizes that acupuncture is effective to treat over 100 conditions.

Many people come to acupuncture for pain relief, but quickly realize that their sleep is getting better too, or their appetite is regulated, or their moods don’t fluctuate as much. This medicine treats the whole you. It can treat the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual levels. It can help with pain and with emotional issues like depression, anxiety, or grief. It can help relieve morning sickness or balance out the menstrual cycles. There actually is something that can help you with pms, or bloating and breast distension.

Herbal Medicine
Herbal Medicine is often practiced separately from acupuncture in China and is a separate branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The herbs and formulas have been written down and developed for centuries. Writing a good herbal formula for a patient comes from correct diagnosis of the pattern and then modifying the formula to customize it to your patient. These herbs are not to be taken casually. It is important that you disclose all prescriptions you are on and any other herbs or vitamins you are taking as there can be herb/drug interactions that need to be avoided. Certain herbs have to be avoided with conditions like high blood pressure for example.

There are three typical ways you can take a formula.

A teapill is a very small prepared formula. It is the weakest version you can take, but it cannot be modified and results will be gradual. They are gentle and convenient.

A powder is a formula made by your practitioner and can be modified to fit your pattern exactly. It is mixed with some warm water and taken as a tea. The benefits are convenience and portability with quicker results. It is stronger, but some people do not like the taste. In this case, the powder can be put into capsules.

A Tang or tea, or traditional herbal soup, is made from raw herbs that you will cook up yourself. It can be modified to fit your pattern exactly. It is the strongest form of herbal medicine you can take and has the quickest results. It has a strong flavor and you need to cook it yourself.

Herbal medicine can help to reinforce the acupuncture or to replace acupuncture if someone does not like needles. The companies that I use carefully check for the quality and purity of the herbs used. There are many easy, wonderful formulas that can be useful to know about and keep around the house to help keep you well. There are formulas that help with high cholesterol, stopping smoking, weight loss, anxiety, gall stones…. There is even a line of herbs now that are made using glycerin and designed just for children.
