The First Step to Healing

Healing means tending to any problem in your body until it’s better.
Acupuncture helps encourage the body heal, even when it’s struggling to do so on its own.
Yesterday I had a new patient in her 80’s who came to me with many pains in her body and lots of challenges. I worked on her and noted a small swollen area in the low back and sacrum. It’s very common for people to have swelling there – some people develop this when they are young and accumulate a lot of swelling and some people don’t get it until they are older and only have a little.

I placed my acupuncture needles and put my light therapy device over the swelling and let my new patient rest for 20 minutes. When I came back, I was pleased to note that the tissue seemed tighter and firmer and less flabby.
Acupuncture can invigorate the tissue and help stimulate the body to heal itself.
Sometimes I get a patient who has one treatment and feels significantly better. Sometimes a new patient takes several visits to feel better. This is because healing depends on what your level of health currently looks like.

Some people think acupuncture should just fix things, but the truth is YOU have to fix yourself by having a healthy life and taking care of your body.
As I talk to my patients, I often share things that will help them:
An herbal formula that can help the body to be stronger.
An exercise you can do.
Pulling the head back and improving the way the neck and shoulders sit above the body so the nerves can get through and the muscles can relax.
A food you can eat.
These diet and lifestyle pieces of advice are extremely important for healing.

Yesterday my new patient got out her notebook and wrote things down. She wrote down why I said she was having health problems, and what I suggested she do. It is always good to see a patient who is trying to heal instead of being too passive.
This does not mean that a patient who is too tired to write things down will not heal, but I feel very certain that this new patient will progress quickly because she is trying to get well!!
The important thing is taking an active role in your healing journey. When you find a trusted healthcare provider who wants to see you get better, it’s important to stick to the plan you develop together. This plan might need tweaks and adjustments as you go, but taking steps to heal will help you feel better much faster than staying still.

It’s time to make a decision on how to improve and stick to it. You deserve to put care into yourself to feel better.
Information is coming at us so quickly, and I think this sometimes makes us forget to apply the new knowledge that helps healing.
It takes time for things to “fix” you, and sometimes it takes a treatment like acupuncture to stimulate the body to heal when it is not.

I have sincerely fallen in love with acupuncture as I have practiced it for 17 years now. I love getting acupuncture myself and I love how I feel after I get it. I love giving acupuncture and helping my patients turn their health around and feel better.
Acupuncture is like a Swiss army knife. It can treat so many conditions from a patient with panic attacks who is feeling better and sleeping better to a patient with complex migraines and sinus infections who was losing days to his headaches and eye pain.
That patient is on an herb to strengthen his blood vessels behind his eyes while the acupuncture calms the inflammation in his sinuses so his body can enter a state of healing. He is on the path to helping his body get stronger and can re-focus on his life, his career, and his new girlfriend.

It's the most wonderful thing to be able to stop focusing only on suffering and refocus on your life!
So, I encourage you to make an appointment! When you come to my clinic in Lakewood, CO, I will take the time to listen to your symptoms and concerns and find a plan that makes sense for you.
