Wait… allergies already? Spring snuck up on us quickly, and allergy season will be here before you know it.

Do you feel like the only ways you know how to help your allergy symptoms are by taking antihistamines or allergy shots? What if there were natural ways to relieve your symptoms while helping your overall state of health?

Allergies arise when your immune system becomes unbalanced, with this imbalance comes confusion around which particles are safe, and which are invaders. Your immune system thinks it’s doing its job to keep invaders out by giving you sneezing and a runny nose, but it’s attacking harmless allergens like pollen and pet dander.

Giving your body what it needs to heal and find balance again will help remind your immune system which particles are safe, and which are not, giving you relief from allergy symptoms. Try these 5 tips for ditching allergy symptoms and helping your immune system find balance again:

1. Avoid sugar and increase fruits and veggies

Sugar causes inflammation, which is fuel for allergies. Inflammation causes stress to your immune system, weakening it and making it difficult to work properly.

If you want to get rid of allergy symptoms, you need to give your immune system a break by minimizing inflammation. Cut back on sugar to bring balance back to your body.

On the other hand, the nutrients in fruits and vegetables help rebuild your immune system so it can become strong again. Vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants reduces inflammation so your immune system can rest and rebuild.

2. Manage your stress levels with gentle exercise

Stress worsens your allergies by releasing excess cortisol, which triggers an overactive immune system. This leads to more inflammation, and more stress, to your system.

Getting up and moving helps your body process stress and keeps your cortisol levels under control. If you want an easy and quick way to add exercise into your day, join me on the WalkFit challenge!

This easy-to-use app helps you get moving through walking indoors – I wanted a no excuses type of routine that I could use without thinking about it too much and this gave me exactly that. Whenever I have an extra 10 minutes, whether at home or in the clinic, I can use this app to make sure I get my steps in.

Make sure you listen to your body, if something hurts you can take it easy that day. At 51, I noticed my left hip was acting up and did half of the recommended steps that day, then doubled the next day to make sure I got my steps in.

I am all about low and slow, building yin to balance yang. We are all tired my friends, but this is a great way to get moving without overdoing it.

3. Start herbs

Herbs are a great way to bring balance to your body, especially your immune system. They can help level out your immune response, decrease inflammation, and get your cortisol under control.

Aller-ease is a great formula for getting rid of allergy symptoms like sneezing and runny noses, plus you can get it in my clinic next time you come in for a treatment. Neuroregenex and Boswellia Complex are great herbs for reducing inflammation and helping your immune system rebuild, find them here. We can also add any of these remedies to your Fullscript cart, ask me at your next appointment if these formulas are right for you.

4. Stay on top of dry weather

In Colorado, you have to deal with an extremely dry climate and make sure you’re getting enough moisture. If you don’t add moisture to your environment, you risk becoming too dry yourself.

Use a humidifier to bring some moisture into your environment, and make sure to keep it clean. You don’t want to make your allergies worse by exposing yourself to mold and mildew.

5. In certain cases, take over the counter allergy medications

Natural methods aren’t enough? While I always recommend that my patients try the natural route before resorting to medication, this is still a great option if you need quick relief.

Allergy season is tough, but you can give your body what it needs to rebuild and feel good again. Stop dreading spring and enjoy this beautiful time of year, schedule an appointment and we can come up with an allergy plan to conquer your symptoms.
